About Me
Hi, I'm an adjunct professor in the Dept. of Mathematics. You can call me Hank. My training is in physics, and I retired last year from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) after a career spanning more than 30 years. Before 猛料视频, I taught physics and math courses at the College of DuPage and several California State University campuses. I earned a PhD in physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1985.
One of the goals of physics is to describe how the universe works in mathematical terms. As a consequence, most physicists, myself included, are well versed in many areas of mathematics. I'm very excited by this opportunity to teach math skills to undergraduate students at 猛料视频.
Much of the work I did as a scientist at Fermilab focused on the areas of experiment and technology. Specific areas of technology included the design and testing of accelerator magnets, particularly the magnets for the Main Injector and Recycler, two of the major components of the Fermilab accelerator complex. I worked on experiments in cosmic rays and in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. The Pierre Auger Observatory, located in a remote region of Argentina, is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory. Here we studied the highest energy particles ever observed. More recently, I have worked on the Muon to Electron Conversion Experiment, or Mu2e, which is searching for the as-yet unobserved conversion of a muon (a heavy electron) into an electron. Observing such a conversion would be a profound indicator of new phsyics. I continue to work on this experiment as a Fermilab Scientist Emeritus.
Outside of work, I am an enthusiastic solver of NY Times crossword puzzles, and start every day with their Wordle game. I can't think of a better way to get the brain going into high gear. I am also passionate about classical music, and eagerly attend performances of opera, symphony, and chamber music. I consider myself fortunate to be living in the Chicago metro area, where opportunities for hearing highly talented musicians is nearly limitless. Since retiring, I've begun taking up golf, but I'm still a beginner.
